Christopher Columbus, The New World & Hemp

While Columbus gets a bad rap for discovering an already inhabited land, he goes completely unrecognized for being the first person to bring hemp into the “New World.”

Canvas is a derivative of the word cannabis so anything made of canvas, such as the sails on Columbus ship was actually made of hemp.  The Europeans at this point were using hemp oil for lamps and hemp seed for food. The Indians on the other hand relied heavily on corn and therefore were limited when it came to clothing and shelter.
